Level with me, Dungeon Meshi Maniacs. How much leftovers did you have after making the Succubus and Bicorn Brain Doria? I had a surprising amount! Sure, there are only two of us in this part of the dungeon but I'm a big eater. With even that, Editor and I had a good amount left over. I love a dish like that. Something you could eat on for a few days or even mix into other dishes. As I ate I kept thinking about the human flesh comparison that came up during our Jackfruit talk. No, not whether it could really kick the dish up a notch. I thought about the act of cannibalism itself. Cannibalism is one of the biggest eating taboos we have, DMMs. Which made me think about eating taboos in general. Buckle up! This week I'm sharing opinions on the Internet!
I have to admit, DMMs, this is a very touchy subject. And I don't just mean cannibalism. I mean talking about eating taboos in general. Taboos for some won't be taboos for others which means you're going to end up stepping someone's toes. Take cannibalism itself. You'd think it would be easy to talk about cannibalism rates and what is or is not acceptable. But dig just a little below the surface and you find most claims of cannibalism have fairly racist origins. Want to claim the group you are subjucating are sub-human? Quickest way to to that is to claim that they eat humans. This goes back a long way, DMMs. The Romans pretty much claimed anyone that wasn't them were cannibals of some sort. Easy to beat up someone that you don't think is human!
The reasons for actual cannibalism are all over the place too. Is it because of food scarcity? Maybe a ritual? Maybe they did like the taste of people? I also don't feel that I'm qualified enough to talk on cannibalism. That's for your social anthropologist which I was told I'd never be (thanks High School Anthropology Teacher!) So what's left? The largest provider of eating related taboos is religion which is a third rail of a topic I DO NOT WANT TO TOUCH! There are numerous religions that have rules on what you should or should not eat. Which is great for the particular believer. Not being a person of faith I always feel like I'm not the best person to question the beliefs of others. Provided they stay with that person, DMMs. If you deny yourself a food because of faith, that's great! If you deny someone else a food because of faith, that's bad. Which means I'm not comfortable about talking the various religious taboos. I don't want to come off as mocking firmly held beliefs. So what does that leave us? Well, why don't we talk about my favorite topic? Me!
*sigh* I wish I was a handsome orc. A slime I am, though. Let me tell you a little story, DMMs. The 1986 Kentucky Derby was won by the horse Ferdinand! This was one impressive horse. Not only did he win the Derby he won the 1987 Breeders Cup and was the 1987 Horse of the Year! He was also a real cutie.
I don't think there is an Umamusume of Ferdinand but there should be! Ferdinand retires and goes to stud, the dream of all race horses. He has a successful career as a stud which isn't as easy as you'd think! Time takes its toll and as he ages he sires fewer and fewer horse until 2002 when Ferdinand's then owners throw up their hands and have him slaughtered for pet food. Real question, DMMs. How did that story make you feel? Me personally? I leaves me disturbed. I don't know why but I can't come around to the idea of using horses for food, human or pet consumption. It's my personal eating taboo.
To not end on such a down note I can say that Ferdinand's death lead to legislation that allows original owners to a horse the chance to buy them back if the current owner decides to chop them up. Recent Derby winner Silver Charm was rescued that way. There is also a growing industry of thoroughbred retirement homes where old horses can hang out in their old age. Horses live a long time, DMMs! They may look cute when you see the pony at the pet store...but they grow up. So how about it? Are there any eating taboos that you have? Let me know! I love to learn the lines my friends won't cross. That's it for this week but be sure to come back in 7. We are going to cook one of the most famous monsters in the entire dungeon!
Not that one, DMMs.
