Good morning, Dungeon Meshi Maniacs! I really hope you gave making a Dutch Baby of your own a go. While I'm sure there are some that would prefer a bowl of shredded wheat for breakfast, I'm always going to go for the hot and doughy. A side effect of last week's post is I became Breakfast Brained. I couldn't stop thinking about not just breakfast in general but how I typically start my mornings. That's what I'm going to share with you this week, DMMs. We'll look behind the blog and see how your humble slime blogger starts their weekday!
Needless to say, Senshi really does his mornings right. Wish I looked this cut and handsome first thing. Yes, yes. This is probably Senshi getting ready for bed and he is writing a recipe but it could be a dream journal! As for me, the main thing you have to know is that I am an EARLY bird. And I mean early.I've never understood it, DMMs. I don't come from a family of early risers. I just tended to get up before everyone else. That comes with it's own pluses and minuses. Things like never having to argue with someone over video games but also never actually hearing the music because you have to keep the sound off. The other thing you have to know about me is I go for a run just a few minutes after waking up. Here is a shot of what I typically see each morning.
Okay, it's normally not all Silent Hill. And please don't take this the wrong way, DMMs. I'm not sharing this to brag in any way. I don't run for health or to feel superior to anyone. I run first thing in the morning because I enjoy it and I'm good at it. I firmly believe you should start your day with something you love. If that's running, then run. If that's drawing, then draw. If that's just sitting and listening to music then rock out! At the very least you'll start your day on a better note. When I get back and have cleaned off it's time to make breakfast. Every weekday except Wednesday is the same menu so that makes things easier. First, I have to feed a monster.
Never eat before your cat, DMMs. They will never forgive you. Once that beast has been sated it's time for me! And that means salad!
Seriously! I have a salad every weekday morning. I can't remember where I read it but when I started running all those years ago I saw that a salad after a run is a good idea. It's supposed to help get some lost nutrients, or something. If you use a 50/50 blend like I do it'll have spinach in there were is good for iron and the leafy greens are good for the gut. I also put in some sesame sticks for a nice crunch! While I'm eating my salad I'll set the oven to 350. Why? It's time to bake some bagels.
Half a bagel for me and half for my editor. "Oven? Why don't you put these in the toaster, you cheap cephalopod?" I can hear you yell into a bottle then throw it into the sea. That's easy, DMMs. I don't own one. My kitchen only has so much space! And the oven does a good job. The bagels just need 10 minutes. While those toast it's time for some protein. The best way to get protein? Eggs.
Boiled eggs, that is! I know you've probably watched Rocky and saw him drink three raw eggs for protein. That is a way to do it but what's the difference between a raw egg and a cooked egg, DMMs? The cooked egg is cooked. That's it! Nutritionally it's they are the same. You're just less likely to get sick eating a cooked egg. Now everyone has their own magic way to boil an egg so you continue to do it the way you like. As for me I'll cover this pot and turn the heat to high. Once it comes to a boil I'll take the lid off. That's the stuff! With the lid off I'll let them boil for 4 minutes. Once the time is up I'll take the pot off the heat and remove my editor's egg and put it in a bowl of cold water. They like a softer egg than I do. As for me, I'll just let the egg sit until I'm ready to eat it later in the morning. Sometimes nearly 30 minutes later. Boiled eggs are like snowflakes, DMMs. All are very pretty! The last part of breakfast is the most important. The beverage. For me there's only one choice. Coffee!
I love coffee, DMMs. Which is hilarious because I can't handle that much caffeine! I'm not joking, I can really only have a cup a day and that cup has to come before 11 in the morning. But I LOVE that cup. I'm lucky in that I own a coffee roaster and get to roast my own beans. Looks like I'm running low so I know what I'll be doing this weekend! The typical weekday I'll use a french press so I'll use my hand grinder and grind these beans up fine.
Press that plunger down at five minutes and pour. That's it, DMMs! I don't add any sugar, no milk. I like straight black coffee. Now the bagels will be done so take them out and add some sort of jam. My editor loves to make their own jam and right now it's apple butter time!
Monday: Detective Conan
Tuesday: Tojima Wants to Be a Kamen Rider
Wednesday: One Piece
Thursday: Super Dimension Century Orgus
Friday: Samurai Troopers
This list changes as we finish series, except One Piece. Wednesday is a special day DMMs. It's the middle of the week and I need a little something extra to get me over the workweek hump. One Piece is one of my favorite anime and Wednesday is also leg day.
Oh Squat Rack, how I love you. Even though I'm a runner I can't ignore lifting. Turns out you need all the muscles to run properly, DMMs! So Wednesday is more moving heavy weights than running. To help with muscle growth we will treat them to extra protein. Best way to do that? Egg sandwiches! Which are just toasted bagels with cheese and fried eggs. Toast the bagels the same as before but this time with added cheese.
While these toast it's time to get started on the eggs. Fried eggs are simple, DMMs. Melt a tablespoon of butter in small pan over medium/low heat. Add eggs. Cover and cook until they set to a firmness you like.
My editor likes a runnier egg so I'll pull them off around the five minute mark. I like something a little more solid so I'll let mine set a little longer. Egg sandwiches are one of my favorite treats, DMMs. I look forward to them every week! This isn't the only change I make on Wednesdays. I make fancier coffee that a professional roasted. Special! Since the coffee is of a higher quality I'll go with a pour over technique.
Basically, grind the coffee and pour the hot water over. You will need a coarser grind than with the French Press. I know some go as far to use a scale to weigh the amount of water they add. I don't go that far mainly because I don't own one. I just fill up to the rim a little and let gravity do the rest.
Don't worry, I make more than this, DMMs! Gotta say this is fantastic way to get ready for the middle of the week. But what about the weekend? Saturday is either egg sandwiches again or something from the coffee shop I drive by after finishing with my running group...provided the line isn't into the road. Sunday I leave that up to the random whims of what we have in the house. It's always a surprise and fun. Speaking of random, it's what the Dungeon Crew has to deal with next week when they are randomly attacked by a Griffin!
Be sure to come back next week, DMMs! We have to save Senshi!
