I was worried you wouldn't come back, Dungeon Meshi Maniacs. I'll admit, not using any insects at all when I was supposed to make insect jam was a gamble. And I got -tons of emails asking what was I thinking. But if you're reading this then you've forgiven me! Your magnanimousness warms this middle aged slime's heart. You'll be happy that you came back because we are talking the coolest insects of all time. Mimic insects!
Insects pretending to be things to eat or avoid being eaten. What's not to love? Granted the ones in Dungeon Meshi are far more aggressive, to humanoids at least.
While we don't get to enjoy seeing rubies and coins flying around we get awesome things like sticks that can walk!
These are my favorite mainly because they are also native to my home region. Fun Nih backstory time! I am a lucky slime in that I have a wonderful spouse. They have an amazing knowledge of nature and zero fear of the outdoors. They have taught me cool things like nature and why I shouldn't drink sea water. One time back in the way before we rented a cabin with friends in the Great Smoky Mountains! The place was great, not so smoky but very mountainous! While on a walk they found an amazing walking stick and brought it back to the cabin to show the gang. Unfortunately one of our group had an intense fear of insects. ANY insect. The gentle swaying of the walking stick created far more emotion than it probably ever had in its life. Clearly this was an EVIL walking stick! We quickly took the walking stick back to the woods where it probably attacked a wandering adventuring group.
What about you, DMMs? Any favorite insect that uses mimicry to survive? I love how they all have modern super animal names. The Leaf Hooper. The Orchid Mantis. The Owl Butterfly. Chilling but fascinating. Be sure to come back next week because we will be cooking with insects. Finally. For real this time. I swear!
